The Showdown 2011, to be conducted over the weekend of 4-6 November (a long weekend in northern Tasmania) will also be boosted by the international experience gained this winter by a number of its likely Laser 4.7, International Cadet and International 420 dinghy competitors, as well as at Bic Techo sailboard and Laser standard rig championships.

Yachting Australia introduced the Youth Sailing Grand Prix to help create Australia’s next group of Olympic champion sailors. The program, which encompasses regattas in all States, is set to build a strong national competition that encourages youth participation, providing young sailors with the chance to race at a number of regattas against strong competition. For the first time ever, Yachting Australia will be awarding prize money for a youth event, up to $3000 per winning crew, dependent on the class. Winners will be required to use the funds towards competing at further events. The Youth Sailing Grand Prix will include seven classes with sailors competing in Laser 4.7 and Laser Radial, 420, RS:X, Bic Techno, 29er and Hobie 16.

The Showdown 2011 is one of the final five regattas to complete the first year of the Youth Sailing Grand Prix, along with the New South Wales State Youth Championship in October, Sail Sydney, Sail Melbourne and Sail Brisbane.
